Media Studies

We have viewed several British Crime Films to gain the understanding of techniques that are used in British Crime Films today:
  • Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
  • The Long Good Friday
  • The Godfather
  • Layer Cake
  • The Bank Job
  • Snatch
  • Rock and Roller

These films use various techniques, the film that I'm going to analyse is 'Snatch' this following film uses various techniques to fit in the genre of 'crime' films. This trailer shows the number of characters in the film, Guy Ritchie uses various techniques which portray the genre of a  crime film. This is represented with the use of diamonds, guns, underground street fighting, and dog fighting. All these techniques that Guy Richie uses  we can use to create a 3 minute film which shows various tools which will be shown to relate to the 'British Films' section. Guy Ritchie's films always begin with a voice over at the beginning of the trailer, this introduces the characters straight away. This is why we have chosen to do a voice over in our film, this will introduce all the characters which will be involved in the 3 opening minutes.

30th November 2011
Today we begun thinking about ideas regarding our opening two minutes; we have discussed as a group a possible plan, my group member Katie Burton designed a story board which gave us a visual look into the idea which came to life. The ideas that we have decided upon to do in our opening two minutes are as following:
  1. Introducing characters with 'nicknames'- Characters names Jake: Body Bag, Reeven: Mad Dog, Lewis: Policeman, Katie: The Boss
  2. Running away down a dark alley, from previously robbing a store (One Character).
  3. Show 2 weeks earlier- Katie's plan on robbing store (Special Effects).
  4. Hold a meeting around a glass table- possibly playing poker discussing ideas (Katie's plans).
  5. Then we have an idea- showing present day showing sirens and fading in.
  6. Lewis is the policeman of the group- Catches Jakes and Reeven stealing a shop.
  7. Interrogated by police and then all drop Katie in it.
Monday 5th December
Since we last spoke in our group, we have decided to think about scripting my work and producing a plan which includes all our actors creating an idea to rob a shop. We have discussed which scenes will be talking in and what we will be saying. A scene where we use various different camera angles which were to be shot underneath a table which is glass, showing various different views of the location. We have also decided to make up dodgy nicknames which all portray us in a different light, so for me its Body Bag which shows me to be a character not to mess with, The Boss Katie, Mad Dog being played by Reeven.

Monday 9th January
We have gathered as a group and compared our scripts that we have created for the poker scene and the interrogation scene and the voice overs. I have created a scene which is quite chatty and quite formal which were we all great each other with the equal amount of respect, however I have created a scene which puts katie in high regards as she is the "boss". We as a group looked at this following script, and looked to see if we could cut it down to make it a little shorter. For the poker scene we have decided in our group which camera shots will be used in the scene. Reeven will gather the various props that we will need for the current scene, so we will need the poker set, round table preferably a glass one which we will be able to create a scene where we can see a scene where were able to create power and authority.
Various camera shots will be used such as the tilt shot, which will portray either me or Katie in a higher authority. Another, shot that will be using is 360 degrees shot which will show the characters in all aspects and there specific face movements in specific scenes. A shot that will be under the glass table will also be used, to create a scene where it looks like we don't know the cameras there and it creates the characters seem to be real and have a sense of realism.  Another shot that will be using will be the 180 degrees shot this will be used to follow me and Reeven when running from previously robbing a store.

Monday 16th January
My group intended to meet up previously on the Saturday afternoon to film, the poker scene where the plan of robbing the store come into context. We unfortunantly can't film because Reeven, was unavailable to film on the Saturday afternoon. We have spoken in our group and decided that this following week we will look into ensuring that the talking scenes all flow correctly and portray to come across to have a sense of realism.

Today, Reeven is editing our scene where me and him are running away from the store that we previously have robbed. Me and Katie, have decided too look into scripts, storyboards and the blogs today and edit if need be. We as a group have decided; that at the start of the running scene we will have fast action paced music which will show the reality of me and Reeven robbing a store. The start of the running scene we have used various camera shots: panning shot at the beginning, Close up of the feet, Establishing Shot- showing were we are, Mid-shot.

Wednesday 18th January
I wasn't able to make it to lesson this week due to me being ill, however my classmates were able to carry on with their blogs. Reeven carried on with the editing the final bit of the scene where we have recently robbed a store, now this section of our film is completed. My group also have decided upon what different shots we should use when were doing the poker and interrogation scene. Following shots were:
  • Tilt shot
  • Tracking Shot
  • Close up
  • Two shot
  • Mid Shot
  • Establishing Shot
  • Tracking Shot
  • Extreme Close Up
  • Zoom to close up
  • Over the shoulder
  • Wide angle Shot
We have decided upon various different shots to use through these two scenes to ensure that we grasp as many shots as possible to make the scenes look more professional and create a sense of realism. These various shots will benefit us as various close ups can be used to show the expression of different actors.

Monday 23rd January
Today as a group we have diccussed when to meet up with Lewis to create the poker and interrogation scene. We have made contact with Lewis to arrange for after school on the Wednesday, also we have looked through and practiced our scenes in Mrs Mitchells room to have a sense of what we will be doing later.

Wednesday 25th January
Over the two day period I have read through my poker scene script and believe it didn't flow so well so I made sure that it was made to make sense and flow. Katie has also re-produced the interrogation scene with using terms that an officer will use to ensure its realistic and has a sense of realism. Me and Reeven have decided to follow the British Crime film clothes as we will be wearing a suit jacket and shirt to show us as having authority and power.

Monday 30th January
We have gathered as a group once again, and decided that we are going to film this Wednesday. However, Lewis is no longer available to film with us because he has drama rehearsals that he has to attend this means we have decided to ask another friend of ours, Akmal Shabir to take his place. Reeven has finally brought in his voice over script, we have decided to put in a voice over at the start of the film to explain the various characters and our 2 and a half minute British Crime Film.

Wednesday 1st February
Today we decided to ask another member of another group, Aaron to do a voice over for the beginning of our film to introduce the clip and show a little insight to whats to come. Creating a voice over at the start of the 2 and half minute clip, allows us too introduce characters and the story of the film. Me and Katie are preparing for the filming tonight, by just ensuring that all the scripts and everyone will have the right props and clothing. I contacted Akmal Shabir and asked him to wear a shirt and tie to fit the part of a policeman, and ensure that the sense of realism is in place. We have been given a deadline by Mrs Mitchell that the editing/filming must be complete by next week, due to various issues throughout the process of trying to film, we are now going to struggle to complete this. However, due to these issues our teacher may give us an extension in completing our work.

Monday 6th February
We have finally connected the camera to the computer and placed our filming onto Imovie, realistically we have looked through the poker scene and interrogation that its a poor piece due to the lack of shots used in the acting. To receive the best mark we have been given a time extension due to other issues in our group and therefore; we have decided to scrap the idea of Katie being the boss this is because to create a scene where British crime film is represented women are not normally used. So we have spoke to other groups and our teacher to recruit a new member Ryan who will take the place of Katie's role here she will be able to film and ensure that different camera shots are being used.

Wednesday 8th February
Being the last lesson before the easter holidays we have all gathered as a group and discussed what different shots we are going to use, we have also decided due to the voice over we have created we will have to re-do this as it says currently Katie is the boss, this will be re-done by Luke another member of a different group. We believe that having a voice over, we can place this over the start of the film which where we will introduce the characters.

Monday 27th February
Last couple of days my group, Reeven and Katie were speaking through Facebook, about various different ideas that we could use to ensure the success of the 2 and half minute clip. We came up with an idea that we first had, which were we could have flashbacks of our characters and why we have our names. This idea we have created we thought could give us a good grade, to check that we was still covering the different aspects of crime films we went to Mrs Mitchell our media teacher and spoke through our plans. I had created a little story board to make it all link together; here Miss was able to look into the details of our new plan and she gave us some confidence as she believed the idea would gel together and work for a good successful grade.

Thursday 1st February
Katie and Reeven went to go see Mrs Mitchell to talk through various plans and a step towards a better film production. I couldn't currently go see miss due to me being busy with other issues involving AS work, however Miss approved of the idea they carried on into the macs but they were already logged into computers.

Monday 5th March
We have finally put our media production onto the computers, me and Katie have decided to leave Reeven to editing due to him being really good on the Macs, so we could focus on our blogs. We are currently struggling for time, so we have decided to come in at our lunch times and break times to edit a little bit.

Wednesday 14th March
Mrs Mitchell has just introduced the 'Prezi' to us all as a class. Katie and Reeven didn't like to use the program but I enjoy using the program therefore we have decided to answer all them individually and place them onto one Prezi account which will be mine.

We didn't publish each blog, this is an on-going blog as we didn't release we would have to be publish each blog every time so therefore we have published this as a big one.
